Brief information in English
Albert-Schweitzer-Schule is a traditional Grammar School,
founded on a humanist tradition more than 130 years ago. Originally a
boys’ Grammar School, Albert-Schweitzer-Schule became co-educational
some 30 years ago, and now numbers of girls and boys are about the
same; there are approximately 1100 students (including the Sixth Form),
and well over 70 members of staff.
All the usual subjects are taught in the school. It is, however, unusual for a German school in that it offers English and French as the first foreign language, so that every year there are two or three first-year “English” classes and two “French” classes.
It is possible to participate in geography, history and social
science courses mostly taught in French in higher forms with the aim of
achieving “Abitur” (i.e. A-levels) examined in the French language,
recognized as “baccalaureat” in France.
The teaching of foreign languages is supported by various successful
exchange programs with French and Swiss as well as British partners.
In addition to the compulsory lessons in the field of social sciences the school offers study groups in politics and history. Philosophy can also be taken by older students.
The teaching of the natural sciences
is complemented by the school’s co-operation with the local Astronomy
Society, which has its own telescope near Kassel. Moreover courses in
information technology have become an important part of the curriculum.
Regular music and occasional drama groups present their work in the auditorium.
Most sports are taught in school,
e.g. football, handball, basketball, athletics, swimming, Nordic
skiing. The main sport is, however, rowing – the school has its own
fairly new boat house.
It has been a tradition to raise funds for indegenious Indians in Latin
America over the past 28 years. The morning of the first Saturday in
December sees the present as well as the former students, parents and
teachers all over the premises.
The town of Kassel offers almost every imaginable facility, hobby or
pastime; Documenta, one of the world’s most renowned modern art
exhibitions, takes place here every five years.
Thus the summer of 2002 will add some cosmopolitan flair to the town.
